Why Atlanta? Why not New York, or Los Angeles? These are the towns where big stories happen, they are dream factories and the twin seats of the American cultural empire. Or, why not take the Simpsons route and set The Walking Dead in a generic "Springfield"? There are economical reasons to picture in the land of Georgia: the state legislature passed generous tax programs in 2008 and 2012 that benefit film and video game production companies—among the most generous in the world, with no cap to how much an individual film production company can accrue in tax credits. But, the economical incentive is also what motivated Curiosity to film Avengers Assemble in Cleveland (a city not only willing to shutdown several parts of its downtown for 24 hours at a stretch, but generic enough to portray itself as both New York City and Stuttgart, Germany). There must be something peculiar to Atlanta. But the prevailing theories about this sprawling city are inconclusive, "Atlanta is non a city, it is a landscape," as Rem Koolhaas stated, the postmodern urban center, a middle-less metropolis. Culturally information technology is marked by its "noplaceness" and peradventure this unique blankness might assistance united states of america empathize why Atlanta and its environs are the location for The Walking Dead. Manifestly Atlanta isn't empty, it just looks appears as such; what exercise we run into in this city'due south bare stare? What identification is prompted by the "city too busy to hate"? At that place is a psycho-genealogical demand for The Walking Dead to be located in Atlanta."

This presentation is the issue of my experience teaching undergraduate Fine art majors in a Critical Thinking through Writing (CTW) grade, "Critical Bug in Contemporary Fine art." Much of my specialized information about Contemporary Art has come through my years of working in the arts publishing manufacture, in improver to the specialized training I received in graduate school. In this presentation I will share some of the challenges I've faced in didactics Contemporary Fine art equally well as some of the online resources I've deployed to help me in meeting these challenges. As the title of the course likely intimates, this CTW class is centered on the discussion of Contemporary Fine art, a field of art making that resists definition. Contemporary Art is perhaps most easily recognized by the book of disquisitional philosophies viewers are often assumed to have mastered, or at to the lowest degree consumed, prior to gaining a toehold on the materials presented. Contemporary Art distinguishes itself from Modern Fine art by its extension of the philosophical debates that Modernistic Art began: What is the nature of a medium? What is the nature of identity? What ideological commitments are ensconced in the white cube gallery? And so on. Despite working with Art majors, many or almost of my students had very little agreement of what Contemporary Art is, nor the issues driving the development of the field. Using a prior knowledge form, I identified several problems to be overcome with my students, chief amongst these were one) a lack of noesis about the course materials, 2) a lack of familiarity with the literary conventions used in the field, and 3) a lack of experience in writing about art and theories pertaining to fine art. To address each of these problems, I deployed several tactics for overcoming these matters and for inculcating habits that have enhanced the learning and educational activity experiences for my students and myself. Among these tactics, I've establish greatest efficacy in using digital tools that promote the behaviors I want to see in the students: writing more, attending more frequently, and demonstrating a broader knowledge of the field. I will present the tools I've institute useful and ways in which I've activated those tools when teaching. In sharing my experiences, I seek the collaborative thinking of young man attendees.

Atlanta is a zombie town. Resurgens, the City'due south motto, is a normative framework. The phoenix, Atlanta's totem, is a zombie bird. A totem is some element of the communal identification which is forbidden to be destroyed by any member of the community. In Freud'southward thinking, totems serve as prohibitions against incest. A member of the kangaroo association cannot marry and have sexual relations with another member of the kangaroo clan, but this prohibition against incest also served to avoid the blastoff-male from collecting all the females of the association as his own. According to Ovid, the phoenix flies with the nest in which he was born, it carries with him the sepulcher of his father that is his cradle. Following Laurence Rickels' assay of the "Psycho effect," we notation the nascence of the slasher genre—of which the zombie thriller is a descendant—is Alfred Hitchcock'southward Psycho, whose opening scene is Phoenix, Arizona.

Let'south consider two questions, then, as we seek a reading of The Walking Expressionless that offers some buy on our gimmicky state of affairs.
1) What happened to Atlanta that grips the imaginations of our contemporaries and shifts the City from being a "Noplace," as the recent survey of Atlanta's visual arts states, to an Everyplace?
ii) What work does the zombie, equally a work of art, do?
